Patterning Inquiry Project
Our Grade 2/3 class has been working on an inquiry project around Patterns.
We are exploring patterns in various formats to cover outcomes in several subject areas.
BIG IDEA: Why do people use and create patterns?
We are learning about patterns in various ways - we first found out what we knew about patterns and recorded it on a wallwisher wall, we added to this wall as we went along and it became our criteria for explaining our math thinking- here's the link to check it out: http://wallwisher.com/wall/iy30yzsnsk
We also learned about starblankets by reading Shota and the Star quilt in our L.A. class. We identified many 2-D shapes that go into star quilts by reading this book and looking at many online pictures of star blankets. We are hoping to get a $400 cultural grant to create and sew our own star quilt to give away to someone to show our appreciation. If we get this we will create our own pattern squares and choose from those.

We headed out on a pattern scavenger hunt with our Grade 5 learning partners searching for patterns we could find in the real world, like on the walls, in the halls and on the playground.
Then we learned all about patterns in FINE ARTS and decided to create our own four bar patterns and visually represented them on pattern strips (see the download below). Every colour represented a movement/action. We recreated these patterns in a few different ways, practiced and presented them to the class.

Then we took our pattern strips and represented our same patterns with movement. We discovered that many dance steps and pieces of music are based on patterns.
